DENTAL HYGIENE

You are never too old to start - no matter what your past dental hygiene practices have been.

Preventive, restorative, and corrective dentistry begins as early as a child’s first healthy smile visit around the age of two, and continues throughout all stages of a person’s life. This includes preventing and treating sports injuries of the mouth and teeth, headache treatment, teeth whitening, smile improvement and healthy mouth hygiene. Good oral health is crucial because if your mouth is not healthy, you are not healthy. You are never too old to start- no matter what your past dental hygiene practices have been. Total Transformation Dental and Spa understand that oral health is closely related to overall health, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and arthritis. “Cleaning” appointments are tailored to each patient’s individual needs and may incorporate a wide variety of advanced treatments and technology. Digital X-rays, which have 98% less radiation than traditional ones, not only identify decay between teeth and under fillings, but check for bone loss and for infection at the tip of the root of the teeth. Locating hidden decay before it destroys tooth structure (from the inside out) is a major goal for modern dentistry.

  1. Brush at least twice a day—after every meal is ideal.
  2. Brush for at least two minutes. Teaching tots to brush? Put on a song and tell them to brush until the song ends.
  3. Use a soft bristled toothbrush.  A medium or hard bristled brush can wear out gums and teeth.
  4. Don’t apply too much pressure when brushing as brushing too hard can cause gums to recede.
  5. Change your toothbrush every three months or after being ill with a major illness such as strep throat.
  6. We recommend Sonic toothbrushes and Waterpiks. These instruments help clean the teeth and remove bacteria under the gums. They stimulate gum tissue without damaging it.
  7. Use an antimicrobial mouthwash to keep bacteria at bay. Patients who have dry mouth might substitute alcohol-free and prescription rinses.
  8. Floss or Waterpik daily. These are great lines of defense because food, plaque, and bacteria collect between the teeth causing cavities and periodontal disease.
  9. Use Fluoride- it’s not just for children but is especially important for someone who has a lot of restorations or who has experienced gum recession. Look for fluoride toothpaste and make certain to get professional fluoride treatments.
  10. Get regular cleanings at the dentist. Three months has been shown to be the optimal time for cleanings as this has proven to be most effective in disrupting naturally occurring oral bacteria.

THE PERIO TRAY® BY PERIO PROTECT: NON-INVASIVE THERAPY FOR GUM DISEASE

Gum disease is caused by a bacterial infection that is hidden below your gums. Dental cleanings can effectively treat the bacteria, but when you return home, the cycle often continues. Bacterial cells grow back in just hours after a cleaning, and toothbrush, rinse and floss can’t reach deep enough to address the infection at home.

The Perio Tray by Perio Protect gently applies medication deep under the gums to fight infection. You use it at home for just minutes each day. The Tray is comfortable, flexible, and custom-fit precisely for your mouth. With Perio Tray therapy, you have a new chance against the infections. In addition to healthier gums, patients commonly report whiter teeth and fresher breath. If you’ve been told that you have gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis), ask our team if Perio Trays are right for you.
